The Radio
Set in M'sila
On the evening of the fourteenth of March, Said Brahimi heard his own wedding announced on the radio. The wedding had taken place in 1976.
The story
Said is seventy-four years old, a widower in M'sila who eats standing at the kitchen counter and makes tea with the same ritual every evening. His Grundig transistor radio, a wedding gift from his wife Khadija, sits on the shelf where it has always sat. Then one evening, between a weather report and a Quran recitation, he finds a frequency that should not exist. It is broadcasting the past. His wedding. His daughter's birth. The city as it used to be. And the deeper he listens, the more he realizes that the radio is not merely playing old recordings: it is asking him something.
