The story

Mediterranean SeaM'silaA garage in M'sila, and Mars

Slimane Boudali is a mechanic in M'sila who inherited his father's garage and his father's gift: the ability to diagnose any machine by sound alone. He can hear a cracked valve seat in a recording, a worn bearing through a phone call, a timing chain about to fail from across a workshop. When the International Mars Authority calls with an audio recording of a failing CO2 scrubber on a Mars habitat, Slimane listens, and hears something the engineers have missed. What begins as a single remote diagnosis becomes something no one anticipated: an Algerian mechanic, working from a garage on the Hodna plateau, becoming the only person who can keep a Mars colony alive.
