The Djazairi Protocol
Set in Sidi Bel Abbès, then the Moon
Tarek Zidane was not supposed to go to the Moon. He was the backup's backup.
The story
Algeria's first lunar mission had three candidates. The first got a kidney stone. The second got pregnant. And Tarek, a structural engineer from M'sila who had never left Algeria, got the call. Now he has fourteen weeks to become an astronaut at the Sidi Bel Abbes facility, with a mother who insists he needs more soup before leaving Earth, a training regimen designed for people who actually wanted this job, and the growing suspicion that the Agence Spatiale Algérienne is not entirely what it claims to be. What begins as a comedy of errors becomes something stranger and more profound: a story about what a country builds when it finally looks up, and what it discovers when it does.
The sixty percent is real. In Algeria, we call it optimism.
